This year, I’m asking for a birthday gift that could help a child and their family through one of the hardest seasons of their lives.
Instead of gifts for my birthday, I’m asking you to help me raise money for Endure to Cure Pediatric Cancer Foundation — an organization supporting children and families impacted by pediatric cancer.
This mission has become incredibly personal to me. The man who trained me for my very first marathon is a cancer survivor who continues to run despite the ways cancer continues to impact his body. Watching his strength, perseverance and determination has stayed with me throughout my own running journey.
Then, recently, I lost my grandmother. We believe she had cancer, and I watched firsthand how much the illness affected her — and everyone who loved her. Seeing that up close reminded me just how much cancer impacts an entire family, not just the person diagnosed. And it made me think about children who are facing this far too early in life.
I’ve always wanted to help kids. Before becoming a journalist, I actually started college pursuing pediatric nursing. While that path ultimately wasn't for me, the desire to make a difference never went away. Now, I’ve found a way to combine that purpose with something that has become such an important part of my life: running.
In May 2027, I’ll be running the Cape Town Marathon and raising money for Endure to Cure. Endure to Cure helps families navigating pediatric cancer by providing support such as assistance with travel for treatment and creating meaningful moments of joy for children during incredibly difficult circumstances.
Every mile I run will be dedicated to something bigger than me.
And for my birthday, I’m asking you to be part of that mission.
If you were thinking about getting me a birthday gift, sending flowers, taking me out, or simply celebrating with me — a donation to this fundraiser is the gift I’m asking for this year.
No amount is too small. Whether it’s $5, $25, $50 or more, every contribution brings us closer to helping children and families who need it. And if you aren’t able to donate, you can still help by sharing this fundraiser with someone who can.
This birthday, I’m choosing to celebrate by giving back — and I’d love for you to run this journey with me, one donation and one mile at a time. Thank you for helping me turn my birthday into an opportunity to make an impact. ❤️🏃🏾♀️🎂🏾
